Melted Witch Cupcakes With Candy Witch Hats & Broom Sticks

Whether you celebrate Halloween with cute and friendly witches, or creepy, old witches with green faces and warts on their chin, these witch hat and broom stick are perfect for the occasion. You can make these itty bitty witch acessories to eat as they are, or use them as cupcake toppers on top of a mound of "witch green" frosting to resemble a melted witch! Either way, they are super simple and so much fun!

Melted Witch Cupcakes

Chocolate Cupcakes:
  • 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons (105g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder, dutch processed
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water (or 1/2 cup coffee)

    Green Buttercream Frosting:
    • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter,  room temperature
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/4 teaspoon mint extract (optional)
    • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
4 cups confectioners' (powdered) sugar, sifted
    • 2-4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream, room temperature
    • green food coloring

    Decorations:
    • 12 chocolate coins
    • 12 chocolate Hershey's Kisses
    • orange and yellow fruit chew candy (I used orange and lemon flavored Tootsie Rolls, but Starburst, Laffy Taffy, etc. will work too)
    • pretzel sticks

    Directions

    Prepare Cupcakes:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cupcake pan with 12 baking cups. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cocoa and sugar, mixing until fully combined. In a measuring cup lightly whisk together buttermilk, oil, egg, and vanilla. Gently stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients, just until incorporated. Dissolve espresso powder in the boiling water and stir into batter. Batter will be very thin.

Distribute all of the batter between all of the baking cups. Bake for 16-20 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

    Prepare Frosting:
With an electric mixer, beat butter on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add vanilla, mint extract and salt. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until incorporated. Add cream 1 tablespoon at a time. Increase speed to high and beat for about 3 minutes, until smooth and fluffy.

    Prepare Decorations:

For the Witch Hats, place a Hershey's Kiss on top of a chocolate coin. You can use a dab of frosting to stick them together if desired. Roll out the orange fruit chew into a long rope, and wrap it around the hat, where the Kiss meets the coin. Trim the fruit chew and stick it to itself to fasten in the back. Create a tiny square buckle out of the yellow fruit chew, and stick it to the front.

To make the broom sticks, take another yellow fruit chew candy and shape it into an "A" shape, as shown below. Push the pretzel stick into the top of the yellow fruit chew.

Take a knife and create bristles in your broom by pushing the sharp edge into the top of the yellow fruit chew. Wrap your orange fruit chew rope around where the pretzel stick meets the yellow fruit chew.

Adorable and super simple pretzel broom sticks and chocolate witch hats. By the way, the orange flavored fruit chew taste amazing with the chocolate (like those break-apart chocolate oranges) so you might want to make extra, just in case you accidentally eat like a million of them.... you might want to trust me on this one ;)

To make them even cuter, top your "witch green" frosted cupcakes with these cute little treats. I used my simple Black & White Cupcakes recipe. It is a fudgy chocolate cake with a thick, sweet American buttercream on top to hold up the witch hat & broom stick. Or you can always use store bought cake mix and canned frosting to save time. Just remember to beat in Green icing color until you have reached a bright "Witch" green. Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes and add your Witch toppers.
